Professional
/ Personal Background
Nancy
understands the personal journey of recovery because
she continues to walk the path herself. Along
with her own involvement in the 12-step recovery
process, Nancy has lived with diabetes for most
of her life. From these experiences, she has developed
and follows the principles of Successful Self-Care
in her own life. Her passion and commitment has
been to share these principles with others, who
have found them to be highly effective in their
lives.
Helping
others has been a recurring theme throughout the
course of her life. As a young girl, growing up
on a farm in Pennsylvania, Nancy continually rescued
stray, sick or injured animals that wandered onto
her family’s farm.
As
a teenager, she took care of children whose
mothers had to work outside of the home.
From these early experiences, she decided
to become a nurse and entered a bachelor’s
degree nursing program at Case Western Reserve
University. However

once
on the hospital floors, as a student nurse, she
discovered her talents were better realized in listening
to patients’ feelings rather than changing
their bandages. As a result, she shifted her focus
and training to the field of psychology, where she
found her niche and quickly excelled.
After
receiving her B.A.in Psychology, Nancy earned
her Masters of Social Work degree at the Smith
College School for Social Work. Her internship
at Smith College led her to Chicago, where she
trained at Jewish Family & Community Service.
She was hired to stay on at JFCS upon graduation
from Smith. While there, she received family therapy
training and became an In-Service Training Supervisor.
Later, she served as Family Therapy Consultant
at LaGrange Mental Health Center and then became
Social Work Consultant to the Swedish Retirement
Association. Nancy went on to become Executive
Director of Cathedral Counseling Center in Chicago,
before starting her private practice in 1992.
She became President of Successful Self-Care,
Ltd. in 2005.
